Higher fidelity—a safeguard to marriage
Recently a friend told me of her deep concern about the marital difficulties a number of her acquaintances had experienced. She said that several married women she knew had been deserted during the past year. Current divorce statistics certainly confirm what my friend witnessed in her own community.
Clearly there needs to be healing and a better safeguard for marriage than is afforded only by spoken vows, contracts, or civil law. The protection a marriage truly requires can be firmly established when the unifying action of the Christ is brought to one's life through prayer—humble prayer expressed in a pure devotion to God, a steadfast adherence to His law, a love of good, and a willingness to serve God and do His will. All of this constitutes a higher fidelity that, in turn, strengthens one's commitment and loyalty in marriage.
When one is faithful first to God, he or she is building a solid foundation for the spiritual courage needed to resist the temptations of the world. These temptations are a form of mesmerism, termed animal magnetism in Christian Science. They are suggestions of the carnal mind that would attempt to divide and separate, to pull one away from what is good and pure.
