How grateful I am for two recent healings in Christian Science

How grateful I am for two recent healings in Christian Science. These healings demonstrated for me that we can be healed when we pray—ask for and listen to God's guidance—and then obey the divine commands. As Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 1),"Prayer, watching, and working, combined with self-immolation, are God's gracious means for accomplishing whatever has been successfully done for the Christianization and health of mankind."

One Friday morning I developed a severe backache. Although I managed to make it to work, I was in pain and could not walk in a normal manner. When I returned home I was quite concerned about the situation, for I was to play tennis with three friends early the following morning. I thought it might be best to call someone to substitute for me, since I didn't want to spoil my tennis companions' fun, and I surely wasn't in any condition to play. However, I decided to pray about it first. Then the thought came to me that I shouldn't get a substitute player, that I could be in my place on the tennis courts the next morning.

The following morning, however, the physical condition did not appear to be much better. I thought, "What will I do? I'm in no condition to play tennis, yet it's much too early in the morning to call someone to be my substitute in the foursome." Then I prayed to calm these fears and to know that God, the divine Mind, would provide for me right then and there the spiritual ideas that I needed at that moment. Instantly, portions of two verses from the Bible came to mind. They were: "that my joy might remain in you" (John 15:11); and "your joy no man taketh from you" (John 16:22). I felt that these truths were what I needed to heal the condition of backache. They spoke to me of my innate perfection and freedom as God's child. I was then confident I could go to the courts that morning and enjoy the game as much as I always had.
