Christian Science came to me during a particularly difficult time...
Christian Science came to me during a particularly difficult time in my life. For many years I had been suffering from a chronic disease that caused me severe suffering and required me to take medication several times a day. I was resigned to suffer, even though this seemed to me to be totally unfair.
Each time I read of Christ Jesus' healings, narrated in the Gospels, I wondered, "Why can't we do the same?" One day my daughter came over, full of joy, and said, "I met some Christians who heal themselves through prayer!" I was surprised and doubtful, and asked, "How do they do it?" After hearing her explanation, and despite my doubts, I expressed the desire to examine the teachings of these Christians—Christian Science. So my daughter bought me a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.
Right from the first, this book surprised me; then it interested me more and more. Since my early childhood, I had been an avid reader of the Bible, and I was fascinated by the spiritual interpretation of the Scriptures given in Science and Health. I was sometimes puzzled by what I read. Yet I admired the author's faith, courage, and daring. Included in the wonderful points I found particularly interesting were what she had to say about silent prayer, Jesus' ascension, and the unreality of evil. When I finished reading Science and Health, I was happy to have read something that shared such intelligent views on God and His Christ. I thought, "Here is a Science that must be studied," and I began studying the Bible Lessons as outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly.
