Christian Science was first brought to the attention...
Christian Science was first brought to the attention of our family when I was a child living in Alberta, Canada. Some copies of the Sentinel had been given to my mother by a member of another religious denomination. Burdened with much work and little free time, my mother packed them away unread, although we certainly needed the spiritual truths those periodicals contained.
We had many problems to meet. There were no churches in our vicinity or for many miles around. While I was in need of physical healing, first and foremost I had a yearning to find out if there was a God that would help and love me, or even if there was a God at all. I could not accept the orthodox concepts about God presented to me at that time. So I became morose, sarcastic, and lonely. Then my mother's health began to deteriorate, and I began to lose my sight. Finally, the doctor told my mother, who was suffering severely with a spinal condition, that she had only a year to live if she remained in that climate. He recommended that we return to the United States.
For a while after moving back to the States my mother went to a doctor, but it soon was clear that he could not help her. Then one of her new friends, who had seen how much she was suffering, gently presented Christian Science to her. My mother left the doctor's care, began to study the textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and was fully healed of the spinal condition.
