One Thursday, several months ago, a friend's mother was taking some of my sixth-grade friends and me to a group dancing lesson. While we were going through a parking lot, our car hit another car, and I was thrown chin-first into the dashboard. Some of the others in the back seat were also thrown hard. Before long the police and an ambulance arrived.

Everyone thought I was hurt the most because my jaws didn't open much and there was bleeding. They wanted me to go to the hospital. But instead, I asked them just to call my parents and have them come and get me. So they did. While we all waited, I quietly prayed "the scientific statement of being" from page 468 of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. (I had been taught this statement in the Christian Science Sunday School.)

Later, as my mom and I drove home, we listened to church hymns [from cassette tapes produced by The Christian Science Publishing Society] on the tape deck in our car. Soon the bleeding stopped. When we got home, my dad shared with me some of the spiritual truths he had been praying with while he was waiting for us.
