From the age of five until the age of twenty, I attended the Christian Science Sunday School. After becoming a branch church member I married, had two children, and took them to the Christian Science Sunday School. Still, I had never really made Christian Science my own. I had never studied deeply enough to understand what it means that man is truly the spiritual idea of God.

My husband and I "had the world by the tail," so to speak; we had everything we could want. But our business obligations kept me so busy that I neglected my study of Science. Soon everything began to crumble—first our business, then our marriage. I filed for divorce and was so bitter about my situation that I decided to do things my way without the slightest intention of relying on God to direct me.

I began smoking as well as drinking socially. The problems mounted and I became ill. Two major surgical operations followed. Nothing was going right for me, and I was in such a state of distress that I spent time in two mental hospitals. Life seemed so futile that I contemplated suicide and even planned how I would accomplish it.
