Awake from the dream of sickness!
A dream can seem very real. But when we are awake, we realize that a dream isn't a reality. Mrs. Eddy uses the nature of a dream to illustrate the deceptive nature of sickness. She writes in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, "To the Christian Science healer, sickness is a dream from which the patient needs to be awakened." Science and Health, p. 417.
Understanding the dreamlike nature, the unreality, of disease involves understanding the true nature of health as real and God-given. In Science, health is evidence of the spiritual harmony of divine Mind. As we understand the harmony of divine Mind, we also understand that Mind's idea—spiritual, Godlike man—is inseparable from wholeness, health, immortality and all good, because he is inseparable from God. This real man is the true identity of each of us.
In Christian Science, the illustration of sickness as a dream has profound implications. This Science exposes as a dream all evil—all the fear, ignorance, and sin that produce disease and death. The whole dream of life in matter, seem it good or seem it bad, is as unreal as the dream of disease. Awaking from the dream of sickness is often the beginning of awaking from the more fundamental Adam-dream of life in matter. Through study and practice of Christian Science, healing after healing we learn that true being is spiritual, not material, and that the source of health is not physique but is divine Life, God.
