Adopting the true spirit of Christmas
At Christmastime we hear many allusions to the Christmas spirit. A pervasive attitude of good will has come to characterize the Christmas season, and many of us look forward to the holidays for just that reason.
But we often hear mention of other, not-so-good spirits, or attitudes, at Christmastime. We may hear, for example, that one person is out of spirits, that another is in bad spirits, and that still another is not in the spirit of Christmas.
We may feel that we have little or no choice as to which of these numerous attitudes we manifest at any given moment. Yet the Bible admonishes us, "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God." I John 4:1.
