In 1969 a fellow student took me to a lecture on Christian Science. The lecturer explained Christian Science Mind-healing to the audience and also spoke of the divine revelation Mary Baker Eddy had, which led to her discovery of Christian Science and the founding of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts.
Afterward I asked the lecturer some questions. In sum, his answer to all my questions was that the essence of Christian Science Mind-healing is divine Love. Now, as a Christian Scientist myself, I know this is true. In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy writes (p. 411), "If Spirit or the power of divine Love bear witness to the truth, this is the ultimatum, the scientific way, and the healing is instantaneous."
Several years ago I was seriously ill with malaria. This took place at the time I was preparing my application for membership in The Mother Church. My family and friends advised me to see a doctor. But I refused to do this because I wanted to rely solely on God through the metaphysical truths I was studying in Christian Science. Before long I was led to call a Christian Science practitioner for help. Several days after that I was freed from this disease. The following passages had been constantly in my thought: "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God" (I John 3:1); and, "In proportion as matter loses to human sense all entity as man, in that proportion does man become its master" (Science and Health, p. 369).
