Frances wins a victory
Standing at the base line of the indoor tennis court, Frances felt unhappy. She wasn't playing well. She didn't care much for her opponent's style; the girl was winning with cagey drop shots over the net and soft ground strokes that died before Frances could get to them.
Resentment crept in. Frances missed the friend she usually played with. "We always have good games," Frances told herself, grumpily, "no junk shots." This girl had agreed to substitute at the last moment; they hadn't met before.
It was Frances' turn to serve, and as she did, trying to smash the ball at her opponent, she twisted her arm. "That's all I need," Frances thought, and winced at the pain.
