About eight years ago I became aware that a spot on my body had radically changed in appearance. Then urgent warnings about such things made public through the news media came to thought. But instead of refuting these aggressive suggestions of mortal belief through prayer, I ignored the problem. Some months later it became evident that the condition was worsening, and it was necessary for me to apply bandages. The fear that I had lived with for many, many months surfaced.

For a time I had the help of a Christian Science practitioner, which was lovingly given. But then circumstances occurred that made it seem best that I work this problem out alone with God. It also seemed important that no one else, especially my family, know of this condition. My clothing concealed the difficulty, and there were always reasonable ways to avoid the few activities that were not possible for me at that point.

During this time I clung to the teachings of the Bible, and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. I studied thoroughly Mrs. Eddy's answer to the question "What is substance?" which begins (p. 468), "Substance is that which is eternal and incapable of discord and decay." Also uplifting was this sentence on page 91: "The first erroneous postulate of belief is, that substance, life, and intelligence are something apart from God."
