The freedom of unity . . .

... or the unity of freedom. It was difficult to decide on a title for this editorial. Which is of greater importance to one—the freedom that comes of divine unity, or the unity that is the result of spiritual freedom?

Regardless of priorities, the really important fact is that through Christ, unity and freedom go hand in hand. But lacking this understanding of God's control and influence, and reasoning from a strictly material basis, a person may feel he has to sacrifice one in order to achieve the other. A surface look at marriage, for example, or at any business or other organizational relationship, makes us aware that an individual surrenders, to a degree, totally independent action. It may seem like surrendering freedom.

But a spiritual, a metaphysical understanding lifts thought to the oneness of being, to the nature of unity. We see that anyone's right action, based on the one God and His all-encompassing law, is truly our own action. We understand more clearly that, as stated in Romans, "we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another." Rom. 12:5.
