Our family has had many proofs that "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" (Ps. 46:1). At one point I had an infected toe. The only shoe I could wear was an open-toed sandal. So I wrapped the toe in a rather thick bandage to protect it.

We had planned to spend that weekend in our mountain cabin; before we left I asked a Christian Science practitioner to pray for me. There were many things to take care of at the cabin, and it wasn't until after I had the children in bed that evening that I was able to sit down and do some prayerful study. By that time the toe was extremely painful. I worked with this quotation (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 427): "Immortal Mind, governing all, must be acknowledged as supreme in the physical realm, so-called, as well as in the spiritual." I declared that I was truly a spiritual idea of God, reflecting His perfection. After about an hour I felt completely on top of the whole situation. Although the discomfort continued, I was able to go to bed and sleep all night.

When I woke, there was no pain. I quickly dressed and put on some heavy walking shoes. The shoe fit rather snugly over the thick bandage, but there was no discomfort, and I was able to enter into all the family activities. Upon removing the bandage, I saw evidence of where the infection had been. But that quickly disappeared, and in a day or two the toe was perfectly normal.
