Namibia is a vast desert country in southwest Africa. Some call it "the land God created in anger." But in the last few years one of the largest sources of diamonds in the world was found in Namibia.
I felt for many years that God had created me in anger. I was an alcoholic; I also suffered from severe depression and was always wanting to die. The story of the Gadarene demoniac (see Mark, chap. 5) seemed like my story. I lived mentally "in the tombs, crying, and cutting [my]self with stones" (verse 5). And I could see Jesus from afar, just like the demoniac.
The Protestant church I attended when I was growing up taught a fundamental belief in the Scriptures. I believed the Bible with all my heart, but I never applied its teachings in my life or even considered proving the truth of what it said. I looked forward to resting in peace; I learned how to die, but I didn't really learn how to live.
