Many years ago a Christian Science Sunday School teacher pointed out to me the importance of these words from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 402): "Christian Science is always the most skilful surgeon." (The complete sentence reads: "Christian Science is always the most skilful surgeon, but surgery is the branch of its healing which will be last acknowledged.") It was a joy for me to prove the truth of the first part of this statement several months ago.

One Friday morning I collapsed at work under the burden of sudden, extreme pain. I could neither stand, sit, nor lie down in comfort. My colleagues at work were alarmed and wanted to rush me to the nearest hospital. But as a lifelong Christian Scientist, I chose to rely on Christian Science for help and healing rather than turn to the medical profession. So I persuaded my friends at work to drive me home, which they did.

Within minutes I got in touch with a Christian Science practitioner and a fellow member of my local branch church. The practitioner at once began treatment through prayer, and within ten minutes the fellow member was at my bedside, reading to me from the Bible and Science and Health. By that same afternoon I was sufficiently recovered from the pain to return to work. This seemed to allay the fears of my friends there. By that same evening, however, it was clear that the healing was not complete, and I had to return to bed in considerable pain.
