THE WHITE COUCH and the high-school party
You have to understand that I have always wanted a white couch. And there it stood with its clean contemporary lines, just like something in the beautiful magazines—only it was in our living room, a dream come true.
And there stood my favorite cheerleader, in her white sweater with the purple chenille letter—a badge of honor in her high school—saying, "Mom, I'd like to have a party for the basketball team and the cheerleaders."
"In the basement family room?" I asked hopefully.
