Do we have to drink to have friends?
Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. (Psalms 16:11)
I had been brought up as a Christian Scientist, and drinking alcoholic beverages was taboo. Our close relatives were also Christian Scientists, so I never questioned this abstinence through high school or even when I went away to college.
In my junior year of college this all changed. One boyfriend rejected me, and I spent quite a few Saturday nights without a date. A new boyfriend insisted I couldn't have fun unless I drank. All his friends did, and they had a wonderful time, so why should I be different? He invited me to the cast party of the school's big musical play. Everyone was drinking beer, so I did. This led to other beer parties where I also drank.
