Healing the claims of influenza

I felt the symptoms of influenza just as I was completing the move into a new home. They claimed to aggravate a sense of exhaustion and to take away my joy. But I soon recalled an earlier experience when I had been reminded that the word "influenza" is derived from the same root as "influence."

In her writings, Mrs. Eddy employs the word "influence" in both positive and negative senses. Using a Concordance to these writings, I listed her use of the word in two columns. Then I began to affirm the present operation of the spiritual facts the positive list represented. Next I vigorously denied any power or truth to the erroneous implications of the negative list. I was soon free of the sickness.

Mrs. Eddy's first reference to the word "influence" in Science and Health is in the Preface. There she explains that the physical healings of Christian Science are the natural result of the operation of divine Principle in human consciousness. She goes on to say, "They are the sign of Immanuel, or 'God with us,'—a divine influence ever present in human consciousness and repeating itself, coming now as was promised aforetime,
