Had it not been that Christian Science was presented to me in...

Had it not been that Christian Science was presented to me in my late teens, I probably would have become something of a frustrated idealist. Although brought up in a home where the Bible was loved and we were taught to obey the Ten Commandments, it was impossible for me to reconcile the concept of a good God with the inharmonious conditions I saw in the world. I longed to understand God's real nature and to know how truly to follow the teachings of Christ Jesus. Becoming acquainted with this Science brought a spiritual blossoming in my life.

Five or six years ago, while going down some steps near my home, I fell and severely injured my arm. A passer-by helped me back to my apartment. I telephoned a Christian Science practitioner and asked her to pray for me. Immediately the pain began to lessen. It was a Wednesday and, although I was not able to be at my regular ushering post at church that evening, by Sunday I was able to teach my Sunday School class. No one was aware that anything had happened.

On Monday, because there was continuing pain, I thought my arm might be broken. I decided to have an X-ray taken and from this determine whether or not to have the bone set. (See Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, pp. 401-402, regarding the setting of broken bones.) The X-ray showed that the arm had been broken between the elbow and shoulder, but was set perfectly. I was also told that a severed tendon was causing the pain and was advised to come in for therapy if I did not wish to have a stiff shoulder for the rest of my life. I thanked the intern for his help but said that such steps would not be necessary as I was relying on Christian Science for healing.
