Several years ago God's loving care protected a member of our family. For about a week I had planned to go on a trip with my husband. However, on the morning of departure it came to me forcibly that I should stay home. So I did, and I studied what Mrs. Eddy says in her article "Obedience." It includes this sentence (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 117): "God is the fountain of light, and He illumines one's way when one is obedient."

After school that day our son came home on his motor scooter, looking very disheveled. He said that a large truck had struck him, knocking him under it. Although an ambulance had been called and several onlookers wanted him to go to a hospital, our son had insisted he was all right. Afterward he was able to ride his scooter home. Although he did not receive even a scratch, he told me that if his scooter hadn't been positioned as it was, the truck wheel would have run over his shoulder. (There was a tire print a foot long on the back of his torn shirt.) I was so grateful to realize that no matter how near danger seems to be, God is even closer.

For several years I could not understand why I had been led to study the article "Obedience" that day; what its relevance had been to our son's situation. But later I recognized that obedience to God is our protection from every form of error.
