Release from addiction

In this fast-moving age, symbolized by the computer, satellite communications, and supersonic flight, we often need to make quick, intelligent decisions in order to keep up with everyday challenges. So it seems unfortunate, indeed, that just when we need to gain greater self-control, many are still turning to drugs—marijuana, cocaine, and others that distort human thinking.

Christ Jesus said, "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." John 10:10. But was it mortal existence, with its materialism and discontent, that Jesus was referring to? Wasn't he rather speaking of the Life he knew so well— divine Spirit, God? When God is understood as man's only real Life, this knowledge brings into our experience an abundance of peace, joy, health, harmony. Jesus' ability to see through the hollow suggestions of mortal sense allowed him to maintain an uncluttered perspective of the job before him.

During the temptation in the wilderness, Jesus was quick to dismiss Satan's worldly suggestions. See Matt. 4:1-11 . Through the power of divine Spirit he was able to prove his dominion over the futile promises that materiality could be satisfying.
