I am deeply grateful for Christian Science and for all the blessings my family and I have received from the study of it.

Several years ago, after our elder daughter had had some severe earaches, her hearing became noticeably defective. When we spoke to her, it frequently became necessary for us and her teachers to repeat ourselves several times in order for her to understand. A Christian Science practitioner was called to help the child through prayer. Her schoolteachers urged me to take her to an ear specialist and even gave me the name and address of a doctor. Yet, as the result of much prayer, I felt that the "still small voice" was telling me that my husband and I and our daughter could trust God completely for help with this problem. Our Christian Science teacher gave us a great deal of support by sharing many ideas of Truth. Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes in the Christian Science textbook of the term "ears": "Not organs of the so-called corporeal senses, but spiritual understanding" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 585). We know that spiritual understanding is man's divine heritage, his permanent and eternal gift from God that has nothing to do with matter or material organs; man understands because God understands. "My sheep hear my voice," said Christ Jesus (John 10:27). We can hear the divine message, the Christ speaking directly to the human consciousness.
