The appearing of God's man

We all have much to learn from others. Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health, "Every step towards goodness is a departure from materiality, and is a tendency towards God, Spirit." Science and Health, p. 213. Our challenge is to appreciate "every step towards goodness" that others take—not only those steps we or our close friends take.

In the "Scientific Translation of Mortal Mind" in Science and Health Mrs. Eddy lists what are called in Christian Science "transitional qualities": "Humanity, honesty, affection, compassion, hope, faith, meekness, temperance." Ibid., p. 115. Such God-derived qualities bear witness, in some degree, to the perfect man God has created. They are evidences that the man of God is becoming apparent to our thought. They are steppingstones to the full appearing of the kingdom of heaven within. And they abound.

A healing exercise is to look for these evidences of divine Love around us. It can be particularly helpful to concentrate on a single characteristic. How many examples of hope can you find in one day? Of compassion? Of affection? Faith? The work broadens when we also consider related qualities: courage, tenderness, spiritual energy, sincerity, joy, gratitude, unselfishness, patience. What an adventure!
