From my earliest childhood, my parents provided me with a traditional religious education. As an adolescent, I knew that I needed to know God better. So over the next few years I visited churches of various denominations, hoping to get acquainted with God. I began to read the Bible regularly, to pray with greater spontaneity, and to trust God to guide my daily experiences.

By the time of my enrollment in college, I was longing to find a church that I could join without reservation. I studied, prayed, worshiped, and fellowshiped with all manner of Christians on campus. Still, I felt that the teachings of the churches I tried fell short of the Christianity that Christ Jesus taught and lived, and none could answer my deepest questions. I prayed almost daily to find what I termed my "spiritual home," the place that was just right for me. Within a few weeks I was introduced to the study of Christian Science, and I accepted it wholeheartedly. Within one year I was ready for membership in The Mother Church. Active branch church membership soon followed. The companionship and brotherhood that I have found in church work are irreplaceable.

I have had lovely healings. For many years I had what seemed to me a nagging addiction to chocolate. With the help of a practitioner, I learned that as God's offspring it was impossible for me to sell my birthright—my integrity, self-respect, and spiritual freedom —for a mess of pottage, as Esau had done (see Gen. 25:29-34). I was fully healed and no longer have a desire for chocolate.
