God does not afflict
Does God punish His children? Or doesn't He? "Whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth," Heb. 12:6. Paul says. But Elihu, near the end of Job's sufferings, says of the Almighty, "He will not afflict." Job 37:23.
That divine Love would torment His innocent offspring with sickness, discord, or death is inconceivable. Love couldn't and still remain Love. Neither the inspired message of the Bible nor Christian Science teaches that He does, or that He even knows of such afflictions.
If we were to launch a rocket to the moon without taking into account the movements of the moon, our flight would be penalized quickly for our mistake. The navigational law we were ignoring would neither cause nor know of our distress. But that law does exist. To get our rocket back on course, we resort to this law, uncover our mistake, and exchange it for correct data.
