A period of steady progress during one's early study and practice of Christian Science is sometimes followed by a series of stiff challenges. But as we dig deep into the spiritual understanding of God and man, rise above the chemicalization—the mental stir brought about by the shift from material beliefs to greater spiritual conviction—and learn necessary lessons in wisdom and humility, we are again ready to go forward.

For about ten years I was faced with inharmony in the home, personal problems, and uncertain health. At times the feeling of being trapped in a hopeless situation was almost overwhelming. Also, because of full-time employment and church responsibilities, as well as home duties, I had little time to myself. Nevertheless, I discovered ways to keep spiritually active.

In addition to regular study of the Bible Lesson found in the Christian Science Quarterly, each night I would turn to the place marking my consecutive rereading of Mary Baker Eddy's writings. Invariably, the passage opened to would meet my immediate need for peace or courage or trust. Direct messages came too, such as, "The only way out is up." During this period, particularly when there were crises, I tried to live the God-derived qualities of forbearance, justice, and caring.
