When my husband and I recently moved with our baby daughter to a location far from our families, not only was it difficult for me to adjust to this unfamiliar environment but I also felt the additional responsibilities of being a new mother. One day a few weeks after our arrival, I was overwhelmed by a severe headache and fever. The Christian Science practitioner I called reminded me that God, divine Mind, is always present and that by prayerfully listening, I could feel His direction and comfort. Holding to this, I was able to "be still, and know that I am God" (Ps. 46: 10); and it wasn't long before the fever was gone, leaving me free to care for my baby once again. However, the headache was still quite severe.

That evening I was again very quiet, listening for God's guidance, when this thought came strongly (James 4:7): "Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." It was suddenly clear to me that I needed to resist the belief that there could possibly be any power other than God or that I could be anything less than God's whole, calm reflection. An inner strength welled up in me to resist this belief. Immediately I was freed from the headache and able to join my husband for the evening.

At that time, this verse from a hymn was meaningful (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 49):
