Grandparent or "grand" parent?

Dear Friend:

Your letter rejoicing with us about our first grandchild was most welcome. The love and joy it expressed were sincerely appreciated. And I'm grateful especially because the letter prompted me to think about how one fills this role of grandparent.

First I saw there was a choice to be made. One could be a grandparent with all the implications of human ancestry that title can imply. Or one could be a "grand" parent, expressing spiritual understanding from the only real parent, who is truly grand.
