Survival or spiritual dominion?

No matter what catastrophe presents itself, one can turn to God and find a solution to its problems, attain surcease from suffering, and wrest from holocaust a blessing. Why? Because the spiritual, true man of God's creating—the ideal man presented in the Bible and elucidated through Christian Science—is always at the standpoint of dominion. He is never subordinate to conditions or events. He reflects God-maintained control of the universe. The better we understand this spiritual fact, the less we live under the threat of impending doom, and the more alert we are to escape the hysteria of survivalism.

The word "survival" is in vogue these days, and with emphasis on the negative. We hear about surviving the 1980's, surviving economic hard times, surviving nuclear war—even surviving through the workweek. But truly effective living demands a higher purpose. To make one's life goal the understanding of God and His dominion ensures survival. And far more. It makes daily life an adventure in overcoming, freeing one progressively from submission to big and little fears, hates, discouragements. One grows in his ability to express and accept love, to stand for truth, to operate so as to include a whole view of society, recognizing the needs of all, and thus seek the universal good.

Such a spiritually mature individual or group is never domineering over others, any more than either he or it is submissive to wrong elements. And both the individual and his group will be more able to do those things that improve society.
