As a child I was plagued with headaches. Looking back, I see my mother, a devoted Christian Scientist, offering me healing statements of truth from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. But I also see Dad, a medical man, standing there with an aspirin in his hand.

Both loved me and wanted to help in their individual ways. But I needed to understand for myself the healing power of divine Love and gain complete freedom from the headaches.

It was after I'd married and had a family of my own that I was released from the notion that medicine had anything to offer me. One afternoon, when I was serving as a Girl Scout leader, I was expecting sixteen little live-wire Brownies in my home. Suddenly I was stricken with a blinding headache. Immediately I thought, "Now if you only had an aspirin." Yet just as quickly came the angel message, "But you are a Christian Scientist!" The desire for medication left me and the pain was gone. I'd been instantly and permanently freed by identifying myself as a Scientist, one who relies solely on God for healing. In only a moment I'd gained a conviction in the superiority of Science over material curative methods.
