Christian Science was introduced to me in Bombay...

Christian Science was introduced to me in Bombay, India, just after our week-old second baby died. The loss of our daughter had left me wondering how a loving God could permit such a thing to happen. Yet as I studied this Science with the help of a friend, I learned that God does not cause sickness but holds His idea, man, in perfect health. This potent truth, understood, frees us from disease. I realized that I could turn to God for healing, no matter what the trouble seemed to be. This gave me peace of mind and a feeling of security. I began to understand what our Master meant when he said (John 14:27): "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." And Paul's message to the Philippians became a rich promise (4:7): "The peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."

Eventually, two more children were born to us. By then I was able to rely on a higher understanding of God, and I felt relieved of false responsibility. The result was that the children were happier and freer. All three of our youngsters were enrolled in a Christian Science Sunday School, where they quickly learned how to depend on God. They were taught that they were the children of our heavenly Father, under His constant love and care; therefore, there was no room for sickness or inharmony in their lives. They accepted this readily, without reservation, and the beneficial effects were immediately evident. Among their healings were those of measles and dogbite.

When my younger brother passed on after an accident, I was able to overcome the sense of loss and separation by acknowledging that man, created in God's image, is spiritual and always reflects life and harmony. He is not at the mercy of chance or material laws. Mary Baker Eddy's statements in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures that emphasize the unreality of accidents were very comforting. On page 424 she assures us, "Under divine Providence there can be no accidents, since there is no room for imperfection in perfection." As a result of my study, my parents and sister also gained much-needed comfort and strength.
