Several years ago I was to serve at a county fair by giving each person who stopped by my station a copy of The Christian Science Monitor and taking subscriptions. On the day of this activity, I woke in the morning feeling very ill. When my prayer brought no immediate relief, I called a practitioner living nearby and told her of the illness and how I needed to be at the fair by one o'clock. She said she would pray for me, and I tried to do my part to be receptive to the prayerful work. However, an hour before I was to leave, I still wasn't feeling much better, so I phoned the practitioner again. Suddenly this powerful passage from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy came boldly to thought (p. 421): "Insist vehemently on the great fact which covers the whole ground, that God, Spirit, is all, and that there is none beside Him. There is no disease."

This truth was revitalizing. At twelve o'clock I got up and dressed. The sore throat and chest pains had disappeared. I was well and so grateful to God. After notifying the practitioner, I went to the fair and took up my duties with much success.

A few years ago my husband and I booked passage on a large ship for an island cruise. A few hours after our departure a fire started in the engine room. There was a lot of smoke, and all six hundred and fifty passengers were ordered to the upper deck. Life jackets were to be worn by everyone. But as the upper decks became crowded, fear and panic took hold, for the fire was quite close to the fuel tank. I said to my husband, "Let's go to the bow of the ship." Fewer people were gathered there, and I wanted to pray quietly.
