I am grateful that I was reared in a moral and religious home. When I was young I attended a Protestant Sunday School as a matter of course. But as I got older I began to question much of what I was being taught. Eventually I stopped going to church altogether and decided I would just try to live by the Golden Rule.

For a number of years all went well enough, but when the Depression hit, I found myself in what appeared to be hopeless circumstances. My husband's business had failed, and not only were we homeless and without funds, but I was suffering from constipation and hemorrhoids, conditions that doctors had been unable to cure. They had suggested surgery for the latter, as all other means had failed to bring relief. But having already submitted to a total of six other nonrelated operations, I felt that I could not endure a seventh.

A neighbor, knowing my great need, asked if I would try Christian Science for healing. I refused, telling her I didn't believe in it. But when she asked what it was in Christian Science that I couldn't accept, I had to confess I didn't know. Then she questioned me as to what God meant to me. I recall answering that I didn't understand God and that I didn't believe anyone else did either.
