Spiritually poised

When a football player is properly braced on the line of scrimmage, he's less likely to be knocked over by his opponent. When an attorney is thoroughly prepared and has positioned his case in well-established law, he will not easily be thrown off balance, even if the trial takes an unexpected turn.

Something along these lines might be said of the Christian. When he is spiritually poised, the disruptions and disturbances of mortal existence will not push him over the brink into turmoil. His divinely impelled equanimity will provide a steadiness, an unshaken spiritual conviction that enables him to move calmly through unsettling events.

When one preserves a spiritually based tranquillity in the face of adversity, he can respond more intelligently, more compassionately, more effectively. This doesn't mean the football player or the lawyer or the Christian will never have strong demands made on him. Sometimes he may even face a severe struggle.
