Looking back, I recall with gratitude a conversation I had with a doctor before coming into Christian Science. I was seeing him because of an extremely painful nervous condition. At one point, I felt impelled to remark, "It doesn't appear reasonable or logical to me that one individual should have to go to another to find out about his own well-being. Shouldn't one know himself completely and understand who and what he is?" I can still see the quizzical look on the doctor's face when he answered, "That is an intelligent question, but I have no answer for it."
Not long after this a relative recommended that I look into Christian Science. At the time I was a heavy cigarette smoker. During my first visit to a Christian Science practitioner I was permanently healed of this habit, although I wasn't seeing her for that purpose. In the ensuing years, Science not only answered my probing thought as to who and what I am but it also enriched my life by enabling me to demonstrate man's spiritual identity.
Hymn No. 15 in the Christian Science Hymnal has often been an inspiration to me, especially the first verse:
