During the time I was taking class instruction in Christian Science...

During the time I was taking class instruction in Christian Science, I suspected that I was pregnant with our first child. This instruction helped me to completely revitalize my concept of man's origin, and I am grateful that I was immediately able to put into practice what I had learned.

As a Christian Scientist I felt strongly that God is the only physician, and it seemed unnatural to turn to a medical doctor for prenatal care. Instead, every day I set aside a special time to study and pray specifically concerning the development and birth of the child. I also employed a Christian Science practitioner to help me in this spiritual adventure. Aided by the Concordances to the Bible and the writings of Mrs. Eddy, I studied such terms as: identity, energy, perfection, completeness, wholeness, movement, growth, harmony, heredity, transmission, multiplication, obstetrics, muscles, expansion. At times I felt as if Mrs. Eddy were speaking directly to me through her writings, and this gave me a loving sense of her present-day leadership. Articles published in past Christian Science periodicals also proved helpful.

In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy mentions Blondin, who walked a rope over Niagara Falls (p. 199): "His belief that he could do it gave his thought-forces, called muscles, their flexibility and power which the unscientific might attribute to a lubricating oil." Her reference to muscles as "thought-forces" was, to me, quite enlightening, representing the translation of something material into a tangible, usable, spiritual idea. I perceived labor as not really a process of physical muscles but an expansion of thought that would naturally, perfectly, allow a new idea to come forth in my life. The nine months I carried the baby was a period marked with peace, joy, and renewed spiritual development.
