A little over a year ago, before I began studying Christian Science, I developed dry spots on my skin that itched and spread over my body. I presumed I had eaten something to which I was allergic and that the irritation would take its course and disappear. Instead, the condition continued and became worse and worse. Lack of sleep at night was making me very irritable and depressed, and I felt desperate to do something about it.
I decided to read Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I had witnessed my wife's remarkable healing of rheumatism, which took place as she read this textbook loaned by a friend. She had continued studying Science in the fifteen years since, and she now encouraged me to do the same. She quoted a line from Science and Health where Mrs. Eddy reminds us that "'man's extremity is God's opportunity'" (p. 266).
