LETTERS TO THE PRESS
From Christian Science Committees on Publication
Readiness to confess error of judgment hasn't generally been considered a strong point of contemporary journalism. It's therefore particularly significant when it occurs!
A leading statewide newspaper recently published a heated editorial enthusiastically endorsing the lawsuit for "negligence" that has been launched against The Mother Church and two Christian Science practitioners. The editorial lumped Christian Scientists with "venal rascals who prey on ignorance" and called for bringing "charlatan faith healers to account. "
As a result of discussion with the Committee on Publication for the state, the newspaper not only published a lengthy corrective letter on a day when letters to the editor were not ordinarily carried, but also ran an editorial clarification.
