While I was happily employed at a residential facility for Christian Scientists, acute pain suddenly afflicted the ankles and heels of both feet. I do not know what the condition might be called, as it was not diagnosed. With the gracious help of Christian Science practitioners and other faithful friends at various times, I was healed in about four months.
One of my first realizations was that while I had helped many others avail themselves of the blessings of Science, somehow I had neglected to pray daily and effectively for myself. In the Manual of The Mother Church Mrs. Eddy admonishes us (Art. VIII, Sect. 6), "It shall be the duty of every member of this Church to defend himself daily against aggressive mental suggestion, and not be made to forget nor to neglect his duty to God, to his Leader, and to mankind. By his works he shall be judged,—and justified or condemned."
I also had to overcome pride, vanity, and self-will. In Hebrews we read that "the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart" (4:12). During this time I gained a more humble desire to understand our earth in its true light—as a compound idea of divine Spirit, rather than a material world composed of millions of mortals. Several articles in our periodicals encouraged me to "let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing" (James 1:4).
