I first learned of Christian Science in the period between the First and Second World Wars. At the time, I was serving abroad in the British Navy. A fellow officer, who learned that I had lost all faith in orthodox religion and in myself, introduced me to Science. It set me straight, and since then this teaching has been my constant guide and comforter.

During World War II, the Christian Science practitioner who accepted my request for treatment told me that part of his war service would be to see that I came to no harm. His earnest prayer in my behalf, acknowledging divine Love's omnipresence, was a great blessing. I, and the ships I served on, came through the war unscathed.

Recently, I experienced difficulty with the hearing in one ear. I resisted suggestions to obtain medical treatment or a hearing aid. In this instance, I did not appeal for help from a practitioner but preferred to pray on my own. Much thought was given to our Leader's definition of "ears." She tells us that ears are "not organs of the so-called corporeal senses, but spiritual understanding" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy, p. 585).
