On a wet day in the fall of 1976, I was riding my ten-speed bicycle down a slippery hill. When I turned a corner I ran into a telephone pole and was knocked temporarily unconscious. My mother was not at home, so concerned neighbors called an ambulance, which took me to a hospital. There a doctor examined me and took X-rays, and then waited to consult with my mother on how treatment for my injuries should proceed. When my mother was located she called a Christian Science practitioner, who started praying for me immediately.

During this time, I knew that in reality I was the reflection of God and so nothing bad could happen to me. The doctor told my mother that my face, which was badly bruised and scraped, would not heal in less than two months, and that I would need to have a tetanus shot.

My mother brought me home, and we talked about the unreality of accidents. I got my copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and read pages 390-394. I also worked with "the scientific statement of being" (ibid., p. 468). The next day I talked to the practitioner, who asked me to read the Bible story of the three young Hebrew men in the fiery furnace. He pointed out that after they came out of the flames there wasn't even the smell of smoke on them. In the same way there could not be any aftereffects from the experience I seemed to go through. He told me I had to get rid of the false picture of an accident and be conscious only of God's unchanging harmony.
