Simple, yet profound

Scientific truth is neither complicated nor shallow; it is simple, yet profound. To suppose that the words "God is love," I John 4:16; or, as Mrs. Eddy states it, "God is Love," Science and Health, p. 2; can be repeated thoughtlessly and that this is genuine Christianity is a mistaken notion. Christ Jesus, the founder of Christianity, warned against "vain repetitions" Matt. 6:7; in prayer and against words that had no relation to works.

In Christian Science, Love is spelled with a capital L when it indicates a synonym for God. A great truth is stated simply in the words "God is Love."

No one should be hesitant to start the study of this Science for fear of its being complicated and demanding sophisticated intellectual capacity. The word "Science" in relation to "Christian" means that the Science is practical because its statements can be proved—demonstrated—in daily life. That truth is simple means that it can be demonstrated in proportion to its being lived and obeyed, whether the individual is a newcomer to Science or a seasoned worker in the church. That it is profound means we can always expect to get an even deeper insight into the meaning of the words and statements. The insights we receive through spiritual inspiration and reason will be heightened by demonstration. On the other hand, demonstration will be improved by our deeper insight. These go hand in hand.
