A serene surface

A calm manner, a clear complexion, even an unruffled society. What can bring us a serene surface? Only a peace that lies below the surface—a peace that is essentially spiritual.

We can't find this peace through either an individual or a collective body of people; for, according to Christian Science, the body is not the source of thought at all but, on the contrary, its expression. Not just the blush of emotional distress or the sparkle of happiness, but the entire body itself is an image of thought projected. "As he thinketh in his heart, so is he," Prov. 23:7; the Bible tells us. The beautiful surfaces that reflect genuine, solid peace come from spiritually derived, calm inner thoughts and freedom from frustration. The real within is divine Mind, the source of our true being, or consciousness.

Disturbed thoughts, whether they seem to originate within ourselves or from outside, are never ours. Disturbed conditions are always illusions about man. Each of us is God's spiritual idea, perfect and Godlike. The mortal structure is only the counterfeit of the real man. Our true thoughts flow in unobstructed harmony from God and express the purity and serenity of Christliness.
