Several years ago I felt as if everything in the world was bad

Several years ago I felt as if everything in the world was bad. Nothing specific had happened to make me feel that way. In fact, I had much good in my life; good family, good home, good friends. But I wanted more. Not more material things or more activities.

Just to see a more peaceful world—a world with more happiness. When so much on earth seems to need correction, it's enough to take away the joy of living. I found myself hating—hating the turmoil between people, and hating the waste and destruction of life that I saw.

Then, one significant incident changed my life, and I know my whole consciousness has since been improved. Every day brings new inspiration now, with increasing joy and gratitude for the good in life. The event that precipitated this change was watching a fellow athlete perform at a swimming meet—the National Championships for Masters. This individual expressed a joy in competing and performing that I'd never seen before, so I was compelled to ask how this was accomplished. Her answer didn't attribute her success to training programs or diet. The key was in her attitude—to participate with a spirit of love. I liked sports, but training and performing often left me exhausted and in pain. So, I was curious to learn more about her method for enjoying what often seemed an ordeal to me.
