Christian Science has been my only physician for...
Christian Science has been my only physician for over sixty-four years. For seven years I was plagued by a condition that would suddenly appear as a hard lump in the groin, and cause excruciating pain for several hours. I seemed unable to think coherently or to walk, sit, or lie down comfortably during these attacks. My husband would phone a Christian Science practitioner for me, and the pain would subside. But the condition persisted, with the attacks occurring more frequently and the symptoms worsening.
During one especially trying time, we were unable to reach the practitioner, so my husband called a different one in our vicinity. This individual knew of my love for the hymns in the Christian Science Hymnal, and she cited one for me to study. How grateful I was for this help, and for my dear husband's patient and unfailing support.
Over the next months the hymns were inspirational aids. I used a dictionary to probe the meaning of each word, and I consulted the Concordances to the Bible and to Mary Baker Eddy's writings to locate citations pertinent to my study and need. I wrote each appropriate passage down, underlining the key word, and kept these citations for reference. Many wonderful, enlightening hours were spent this way daily for over a year; I understood the wise counsel Mrs. Eddy gives in this statement on page462 of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: "Whoever would demonstrate the healing of Christian Science must abide strictly by its rules, heed every statement, and advance from the rudiments laid down. There is nothing difficult nor toilsome in this task, when the way is pointed out; but self-denial, sincerity, Christianity, and persistence alone win the prize, as they usually do in every department of life."
