No wasted years
Can we do anything about regret and remorse over unfulfilled ambitions, lost opportunities, or what may seem misdirected pursuits? Yes.
A young man ruminated regretfully over the past because he felt many years had been wasted in a job unrelated to his talents. In talking this over with a Christian Science practitioner, the story of Balaam and Balak in the Bible was mentioned.
Balak, the king of Moab, sent messengers with gifts to Balaam, a renowned seer, urging him to curse the children of Israel. Balak feared the Israelites would overpower Moab. God told Balaam not to go with the men of Balak and not to curse the children of Israel, who were blessed. At first Balaam didn't go, but after further entreaties and promises from Balak, Balaam went. On the way, an angel of the Lord stood in his path, and Balaam couldn't go further until he resolved to be obedient to God. So, in the end, instead of cursing the children of Israel, he blessed them.
