About six years ago, after I had just learned of Christian Science, I happily looked forward to reaching the age of twelve, when I could become a member of The Mother Church.
However, by the time I was twelve, I no longer wanted to join the Church. A short time before, at parties given in the homes of friends and relatives who were not Scientists, I had tasted beer and champagne and liked them. To become a member of The Mother Church meant giving up drinking even half a glass of wine or beer at parties, and I was not willing to do this.
My mother gave me this passage from Miscellaneous Writings by Mrs. Eddy to study (p. 342): "Seek Truth, and pursue it. It should cost you something: you are willing to pay for error and receive nothing in return; but if you pay the price of Truth, you shall receive all."
