Some time ago I found I was not hearing properly because of an almost continuous loud ringing in my ears. I kept answering the telephone only to find it had not been ringing after all.

One day, a sentence in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy gave me, as it were, a spiritual jolt (p.395): "It is mental quackery to make disease a reality—to hold it as something seen and felt—and then to attempt its cure through Mind." Another passage was also helpful (p. 267): "Thought is borrowed from a higher source than matter, and by reversal, errors serve as waymarks to the one Mind, in which all error disappears in celestial Truth." The word "reversal" seemed to leap off the page. I knew I must stop wondering why this had happened to me, because in a sense I was admitting deafness as a fact instead of recognizing it as a lie. I began to realize that I must seek the blessing that always comes as a result of healing.

A phrase from a poem published in The Christian Science Journal, which spoke of Moses tuning "his inner hearing," roused me to be more alert to others' needs.
