I had attended a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, for years before I finally became a member. In joining I hoped that working in God's vineyard would bring me His peace, for events had made this my great need. Almost immediately I was forced to seek divine help. A condition of hemorrhoids, for which I had received years of unsuccessful medical treatment in the past, suddenly became so painful that I couldn't work or even sit.
At my request, a fellow member, who was a Christian Science practitioner, prayed for me and gave me helpful references to study. One of the passages I was asked to contemplate is found in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p.261): "Detach sense from the body, or matter, which is only a form of human belief, and you may learn the meaning of God, or good, and the nature of the immutable and immortal. . . . Fixing your gaze on the realities supernal, you will rise to the spiritual consciousness of being, even as the bird which has burst from the egg and preens its wings for a skyward flight." I began to understand my true unity with God, infinite Spirit. In two weeks I was completely freed from the hemorrhoids.
Since that first healing eighteen years ago, I have had many others, and I have found the peace that I had so earnestly sought. When a finger was crushed in an overhead garage door, I dispelled fear of permanent injury with scientific prayer, claiming my spiritual dominion over the suggestion of evil. I felt God's nearness, and the pain was destroyed. The finger assumed its normal appearance, except for a discoloration. This happened while I was on my way to a Wednesday evening testimony meeting, which is always for me an event of joyous expectation. The next morning all sign of injury to the finger was gone.
