While I was serving as First Reader in a branch church a few...
While I was serving as First Reader in a branch church a few years ago, I had a severe sore throat on a Friday, and the next day my voice was completely gone. I knew that I had to read the next morning and that there could be no evil power to keep me from fulfilling what I felt was a wonderful duty. I knew God would be with me, and that God's word always come through. I realized that it was not so much my voice that was to be heard as it was God's presence that was to be felt. It did not occur to me to ask for a substitute Reader, because my trust in divine Love was strong and I had no fear that I would not be able to read. Walking up to the desk on Sunday morning, I felt God's love, care, and support all around me. When I started to read, the first sentences seemed a little veiled, but very soon my voice became perfectly clear, and the throat trouble was completely healed.
Mary Baker Eddy says in Miscellaneous Writings (p. 334): "You must find error to be nothing: then, and only then, do you handle it in Science." I know that I really saw error as nothing and therefore it had no power over me. "In proportion as matter loses to human sense all entity as man, in that proportion does man become its master" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy, p. 369).
During the more than thirty years that I have been a student of Christian Science I have had many blessings and healings. One of those healings was of stomach trouble I had had for years before I knew anything about this Science. I could not eat heavy things. My mother always cooked something else for me, to prevent pain and vomiting. Through the teaching of Christian Science I learned very quickly the truth of Christ Jesus' words (Luke 12:29), "Seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind." This made me understand that I could eat what I wanted because it was not the food that made me ill, but only my thought about the food. To quote Christ Jesus again (Matt. 15:11): "Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man." This understanding helped me to overcome the stomach trouble, and the healing has been permanent.
